The Villanuevas: Soldados of the Panay Region

The Villanuevas: Soldados of the Panay Region (2023) is an oil painting depicting two defected Filipino soldiers departing from an imperialistic and capitalistic Philippine Government in the distant future. The soldiers are portrayed by Revill Villanueva and Keith Villanueva (in order of appearance) with Spanish surnames translated to “New Villa”. Though their last names were influenced by Spanish colonialism, they consider the definition of their surnames as a form of positive change to establish a new Filipino community that emphasizes communal development, mentorship, and collaboration. As artists and visual storytellers, they explore how their roles can help foster positive growth in our society and resources for the betterment to our shared future.
